Another activity that we would highly recommend is a journey on the Lake Maggiore Express: Also known as the Centovalley Train, a quaint, old-fashioned, narrow-gauge railway, the Lake Maggiore Express leaves from Domodossola. From there, it winds its way slowly up to take in the many bridges and viaducts that span the valleys surrounding the lake. Spectacular views guaranteed! The train's destination is Locarno, just across the Swiss border. Here you'll get time to explore, and even take the funicular to see the fabulous Madonna del Sasso Sanctuary, before taking the ferry back to the Italian side of the lake.
Naturally, there are many accommodation options on both sides of the lake. Our recommendation is not only highly picturesque but also offers a really handy location: The 3* Aries Hotel is a friendly, family-run establishment in Lesa, a small town on the Western shore of the lake, ideally situated between Stresa & Arona. Lesa has its own jetty complete with ferry terminal, which makes getting around the lake a breeze. There is also a lovely array of restaurants & shops on offer nearby, as well as numerous superb hiking trails & lakeshore walks.
